Norway’s 2016 foreign language Oscar submission, The King’s Choice is based on the true story of three dramatic days in April, 1940, when the Germans invaded Norway. The King of Norway was presented with an ultimatum from the German armed forces: surrender or die. With the German air force and soldiers hunting them, the Norwegian royal family was forced to split up and flee. Crown Princess Märtha headed to Sweden, while King Haakon and Crown Prince Olav stayed behind to face the Germans head on. They refused to capitulate, even if it might cost them and many Norwegians their lives.
The film offers a clever analysis of the historical events it covers and exemplifies the bravery of men standing against tyranny.
